Whitelady Lake

Whitelady Lake is one of the four lakes at the Redfish Creek headwaters. Beggs Road, follow the road to the top. 10 or 11k, and there are signs pointing which way to go.

The trail starts and peters out after half a km or so, bushwhacking from there on. It is 1.75km and it took me an hour and a half. Slow going over deadfalls, especially near the top. There is a large swampy area on the south east side of the lake, which makes for spectacular flowers and vicious mosquitos. Luckily the day I was there a strong wind from the west was keeping the bugs at bay; someone was there the day before when it was calm and the bugs were quite bad. So prepare for bugs and bears.

All these lakes take your breath away when you get the first glimpse, and this one is spectacular. A small lake surrounded on three sides by steep slopes. There is some evidence of human activity, with fire pits and a bit of garbage, but not excessive. Here are some shots.

The Elephant's Head were in full bloom, and the anemones had gone to seed. A spotted Sandpiper was nesting in the area and had three tiny chicks.

There is lots to explore here. I didn't climb the ridge, but you can see into Kokanee Glacier Park and down the lake towards Nelson.
